Janmashtami Celebrations 2017

Sweeter than honey, tastier than curd, pleasanter indeed than any happiness and joy is the company, is the power of the name of Krishna. The birthday of Lord Krishna is celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm, on this Janmashtami day, in India. Krishna Janmashtami, also known as Krishnashtami, is observed on the Ashtami tithi, the eighth day of the dark half or Krishna Paksha of the month of Shraavana. Lord Krishna is known world wide and celebrated as an avatar of God Vishnu.

On Monday, 14 of August 2017, the students of Victorious Kidss Educares celebrated Janmashtami. The students of Pre-Primary and PYP (Primary Years Programme) came traditionally dressed as Radha and Krishna. A splendidly colorful program was organized by the children and staff of the school; where students presented songs, dance performances and a short role play. An awareness on Janmashtami, the mythological stories on Krishna, Radha, Kansh – through plays and narrations; were presented to the children.

The students were overjoyed when they broke the ‘Dahi Handi’ (pot of butter & curd) to grace this occasion. Dahi Handi is the most ancient joyful game played and celebrated, for the birth of Krishna in Janmashtami. It is celebrated amidst merriment.Young men and boys form teams, make a human pyramid and attempt to reach or break the pot. As they do so, girls surround them, sing with music, and cheer them on. It is a public spectacle, and well organized historic tradition of Hindus, with media attendance, prize money and commercial sponsorship.

The event is based on the legend of the Krishna stealing butter and other milk products as a baby (he is also called Makhan chor). The little Krishna scrambling upon his friends who form a human pyramidto reach the Dahi (butter & curd) Pot. This holy occasion brings people together, thus signifying unity and faith.
